I figured how to stop being overwhelmed. 

I've spent a lifetime swaying between burnout, paralysis, 'climbing' back up, and needing to get it all done RIGHT NOW. Often that led me to what we call procrastination. I began  to understand what it is to build brick by brick.

 Sometimes because I didn't know what the bricks were and sometimes because I expected the house to be built in a weekend... I would easily give up or feel despondent.

Farmers understand it takes several years before results can be expected.

I use to look for short cuts. Someone to save me. An easier way to do things. But every short cut in the end delayed me.

I could say I wish I knew then what I know now. But it built emotional muscle to find it out.

That was how my wisdom grew. Now I'm patient. Now I'm not interested in short cuts. I don't want my house to fall. Brick by brick, I build.


How to stop being overwhelmed is vital to your ability to sustain the happiness chemicals in your body, and to keep your stress levels down.

Consistent feelings of overwhelm cause abnormally high stress hormones. It depletes the body of happy chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. 

The response is:

  • FIGHT OR
  • FLIGHT &
  • ADDICTION

 This shows up as dread, indecision, confusion, emotional imbalance, action paralysis, burn out, breaking commitments, aggression, conflict, insomnia, anxiety attacks and depression. According to Textbook of Biological Psychiatry, you'll feel the same thing as someone who shows symptoms of severe post traumatic stress.

Overwhelm indicates you've hit your stress threshold - your breaking point of what you can handle in your life.

Here are my three best tips on how to stop being overwhelmed.

1. Overwhelm is a perception. Life is full of challenges and long to-do lists. The way you handle things, has more to do with your internal dialogue than the actual reality of what is on your plate.

Examples of internal dialogue that cause overwhelm: 

  • Impatience: "I want ALL of it right now."
  • ALL or NOTHING approach to life: "I must be able to do it ALL, otherwise I'll do nothing."
  • Perfectionism/fault finding: "I have to be perfect. I can't make mistakes in front of others."
  • The need to please others: "I don't want you to be disappointed or angry with me. I want you to admire me."
  • Self doubt: "Something is wrong with me. I'm not good enough." (One of the best ways to manage stress is to drop the self hate.)

Each of these thinking patterns, prevent happy chemicals from being released. 

2. Breaking it down into tiny steps, makes all the difference in the world. It must be so tiny that it feels easy. Don't get caught up in all the HOW stuff that you don't yet know. Start with where you are right now that you do know how to do. Focus on action that you can do. Each step will lead you to the next one. 

3. Focus on one thing at a time, as if there is nothing else to be done. Do not multi-task. It's not possible to feel overwhelmed when you're totally immersed with your full attention. Concentration yields greater results. You'll do it faster and with a higher level of excellence. Think of how powerful a magnifying glass is. How it concentrates the energy of the sun, and is able to burn the grass. Your energy in single focus is THAT POWERFUL!

You better believe it.


That a man can change himself, improve himself, re-create himself, control his environment, and master his own destiny is the conclusion of every mind who is wide-awake to the power of right thought in constructive action
